11 best suspenseful movies on Netflix that you must watch
Netflix is like a dense and mysterious jungle with lots of great movies, TV shows, and documentaries hidden deep within various categories. Most people often have a hard time finding a new movie or show to watch while moving from one category to another. One of the many categories is suspense or mystery, which amazes those looking for thrills with twists and turns. What better way to while away the time locked inside the house than to watch a good murder or missing person thriller on Netflix?
While there are many amazing movies available in different languages, it was difficult for us to list every movie that our teammates liked. I’ve curated a list of some of the most popular and best thriller movies on Netflix.
Let’s get started.
1. Missing girl
Based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is a missing person and a mysterious murder that turns the lives of a seemingly happy couple upside down. The narrative will continually change and you are never quite sure about the main characters or their intention. It’s not just the couple. It seems that everyone has their secrets hidden under layers of the social fabric that we call society.
Gone Girl will force you to rethink the couple and married life where you can be both victim and aggressor. Maybe that’s why Amy (the missing girl) is saying, “We’re so cute I want to hit us in the face.” That sums up his take on their marriage.
The film begins with an ordinary day. A couple are traveling when their daughter’s arm breaks. They go to the hospital for treatment when his wife and daughter go missing while he is taking a quick nap. No one remembers anything, nor are there any hospital records.
Fractured does a good job of keeping your mind occupied with thoughts of what will happen next. The hospital is a beautiful setup, something most people will identify with. I mean, it’s a place that nobody wants to visit if they have a choice and you don’t always know who to believe.
3. The invisible guest
The story is about a perfect night gone awry. A happy and loving couple book a hotel room. The man wakes up the next morning to find that his lover is now dead. The next thing is obvious as to who is blamed for the murder.
What follows is a cat and mouse game where the man hires a lawyer to protect him from landing in jail. Or, did he really commit the crime? You will love to unravel this mystery.
4. Sleeping Hollow
This one is a classic where you’ll see Johny Depp at his best, at least for me. Set in 1799, at the dawn of a new century, Depp is sent to investigate a series of murders where the Headless Horseman beheads the victims. Is this fiction or is there a reasonable and logical explanation behind the Headless Hunter sightings? Only one way to find out.
The setup is weird but beautiful, with a lot of haze, sounds, and shadows to complete the effect. Note that this is a bloody film with several scenes of beheading, blood, and close-ups that are not suitable for children at all. You, on the other hand, will enjoy yourself.
A guy is kidnapped and mysteriously returns after 19 days. The problem? He’s a different man, with no memory of what happened during those 19 days. His brother doesn’t know what to think of this new person who looks like his brother.
Forgotten is the kind of movie that starts after the second half. You’ll have to wait for the director to create a solid foundation before turning everything you’ve seen and understood upside down.
Based on real life events that rocked the city of California from 1960 to 1970, Zodiac is a crime thriller. With a star-studded cast including Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr., Zodiac follows criminal proceedings interspersed with media trials.
The killer is constantly leaving clues and writing letters, but there is no Sherlock Holmes in this world to wrap up quickly. The investigation goes on for a long time, years in fact, until the very end of the film. Zodiac can seem slow at times, but this is how crimes are solved in real life.
7. Lucid dreaming
Lucid Dream will take you to a burrow of wild dreams where after a certain point it will become difficult to tell the difference between reality and dreams. A father spends three years looking for his kidnapped child, but to no avail. So he starts looking for her in his dreams to retrace his steps.
If you can’t get enough of Inception then you are going to love this movie because it takes a different take on the dream technique. But, equally breathtaking with a complex ending.
8. Murder Mystery
What happens when you invite Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston to solve a mystery murder? Murder Mystery is a suspenseful comedy. A billionaire is murdered on his yacht, and the New York cop played by Sandler on vacation is everywhere.
It’s a holiday comedy that’s a lighthearted, goofy, and weirdly satisfying take on the murder mystery movies. There are also a lot of suspects, some of them played by famous faces like Gemma Arterton and David Walliams. It’s a movie that you can watch with your family and even invite the kids out.
9. Secret obsession
A woman wakes up with amnesia with no memory of her past. Her husband takes care of her. But there is something wrong. She fails to love him back, suspecting that he is not her husband. Who is he then and what happened? How did she get into this state?
Secret Obsession has little to offer in terms of action but focuses more on the plot and all the twists that come with it. Prepare to feel your privacy invaded as you follow Jennifer’s story.
10. The interview
Do you like exhausting and captivating interrogations? The interview has little action to offer, but the scenes are shot in a dimly lit room. What begins as a stolen car and missing person investigation slowly turns into a serial killer hunt.
It is an Australian film that should have received a larger audience but never did. Fans of The Usual Suspects will love this movie. But, there are more twists and turns as investigators aren’t Saints either and quickly find out that even they are under investigation. A must have for those who enjoy watching thriller and thriller movies on Netflix.
Mirage is a thriller thriller that follows the story of a young mother. She saves a man’s life in the midst of the storm, and instead of being rewarded with good karma, a chain of negative events ensues.
The consequences follow one another as the story continues, leading to unexpected twists and turns. Watch the end because it will surprise you even more. A real thriller. One of the best in Spain.
