The Amazon Prime Video and Netflix libraries offer a wide variety of original thrillers – Indian and otherwise. The To breathe the show franchise on Amazon Prime Video is a prime example of the first. It set a new benchmark for Indian shows in the genre. Kind of like what Kahaani made for Bollywood movies. Oscar winner for best picture, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite tells a wacky story about how an impoverished South Korean family pushes a wealthy family to employ them by masquerading as highly skilled individuals. Notably, the film also won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2019.

3. THE PRESTIGE – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO | IMDb Rating: 8.5

Magic and deception take center stage in this psychological thriller. Directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan, Prestige stars Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, David Bowie and Scarlett Johansson in the lead roles and follows the lives of two magicians, played by Jackman and Bale, in their quest to outdo each other. Their rivalry gives rise to plenty of shocking twists and turns – the most important being that there aren’t two Magicians but three in the plot, and it’s not someone you’d expect from the cast.

Todd Phillips’ Joker, follows Joaquin Phoenix’s descent into madness as Batman’s greatest foe. The psychological thriller adds a unique new layer to the villain’s origin story in the DC Universe.

5. SHUTTER ISLAND – NETFLIX | IMDb Rating: 8.2

Another Leonardo DiCaprio movie to do this list is Shutter island. Directed by Martin Scorsese, DiCaprio stars as US Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels in this psychological thriller. Teddy investigates a mental institution on Shutter Island after one of the patients goes missing.

6. KAHAANI – NETFLIX | IMDb Rating: 8.1

A pregnant woman, played by Vidya Balan, takes to the streets of Calcutta to investigate the sudden disappearance of her husband. Only, she is not who she claims to be in this very engaging thriller and takes us to the heart of a great plot.

7. MAQBOOL – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO | IMDb Rating: 8.1

Vishal Bhardwaj directs Irrfan, Tabu, Pankaj Kapur and a set of actors in Maqbool, a dramatic thriller set in the bowels of Mumbai and inspired by the Shakespearean tragedy “Macbeth”. Irrfan Khan takes on the role of the drama’s main character in the film as Miyan Maqbool, the right-hand man of Mumbai’s most powerful gift.
