Mystery punter lands ‘biggest bet of the day’ after winning £50,000 on horse owned by Leicester City owner
A MYSTERY punter was staring a massive £60,000 loss in the face – until the horse he was backing rallied to win to secure a whopping £50,000 bargain.
The incredibly deep-pocketed punter has put the huge sum on a horse that belongs to the owner of Leicester City.
The unknown bettor placed the bet with Star Sports, who are renowned as the biggest layers in the industry.
The punter locked up £60,000 on Leuven Power in an otherwise unremarkable race at Salisbury on Saturday night.
There was first-class action at Newmarket, York and Ascot on Super Saturday.
But the “biggest bet of the day” according to the bookmakers came on this seven-runner race at 6:45 p.m.
The punter bet £60,000 at odds of 5-6, meaning his total return was £110,000.
Leuven Power, a colt owned by King Power, had never won before and was returning for trainer Roger Varian after a 302-day absence.

The horse had finished second in its previous race, a Class 3 at Doncaster in September last year.
Interestingly, the horse that won this race was Thunder Max, owned by football superagent Kia Joorabchian’s Amo Racing.
Thunder Max reached an 83 rating, so there were signs that Leuven Power looked like a good bet on an 82 rating in the Novice Stakes.
And, dispatched the giant 4-11 fav, it looked like a good thing.
But the punter undoubtedly had his heart in his mouth as jockey Ray Dawson got down to serious business a little further.
Leuven Power seemed to struggle behind 15-2 Karuoka, who seemed to find plenty under George Downing.
But the bet on the horse’s class was finally announced as Leuven Power lost the winner by three quarter lengths.
The bookmakers on this occasion might consider themselves properly stoned.
But again, that £50,000 liability pales in comparison to the £540,000 the same bookmaker stood to lose on a monster bet in January.
Another mystery punter has stuck £360,000 on Energumene – a horse owned by Brighton supremo Tony Bloom – to beat Shishkin.
Stable star Nicky Henderson has just won in a thriller at Ascot, which means the punter has lost his huge stake.
But Bloom had the last laugh as Energumene won the Champion Chase at Cheltenham at the expense of Shishkin.
