The story depicts the life of a castaway portrayed by Jagathy who lands in legal troubles which were rare in Malayalam films at that time. There’s nothing mysterious about the film, but the filmmakers are to be applauded for their theme that hasn’t even been explored in other languages. Kanathaya Penkutti (IMDB rating: 7.2/10)

‘Kanathaya Penkutti’ is a thriller story directed by KN Shashidharan in which Bharat Gopi plays the role of antagonist and Mammootty plays the negative character. Kudos to the author of the story for describing the story of an already married woman falling in love with a married person. Society’s concept of marriage is “one man for one woman” and the film broke the routine stereotype. Jayabaharti was amazing in her role. To save her loyalty to her husband, she kills her own daughter. The film is all about the investigation of a murdered girl and the footage confirms what we expected from the start, but the surprise comes throughout. The movie is definitely a must-have Mollywood thriller.

Charithram (IMDB rating: 7.7/10)

Charithram is a 1989 Malayalam film directed by GSVijayan and written by SN Swamy starring Mammootty and Rahman in lead roles with Shobana, Lizi and Janardhanan in supporting roles. The story is about the relationship between two brothers. “Philip” played by Mamooty is desperate to see “Raju” played by Rahman who has already died in a car accident and the rest of the story is how Philip proves that Raju’s lookalike is not his brother. The story is adapted from the English movie “Chase a crooked shadow” and the climax of the movie is what makes the movie great suspense.

Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Kadha (IMDB rating: 7.7/10)

A 2009 Malayalam mystery and thriller film, written and directed by Ranjith starring Mammootty and Swetha Menon in the lead roles. The film is based on a true story of the first recorded murder case in Kerala depicted in the bestselling novel of the same name by TPRajeevan. To be honest, there has never been a mystery movie like this and it will never happen in the future of Malayalam industry. Mammootty is exceptional as a villain, and the powerful look gives the film extra perfection. The story is about a mysterious murder which could not be solved by any cop and which was reopened by Haridas, a journalist after 52 years and who realizes that the murderer was the eldest son of the first wife of his dad. Mammooty played three characters in the film and won the Kerala State Best Actor Award. The film is a must in the list of evergreen thrillers.

Ee Thanutha Veluppaan Kalathu (IMDB Rating: 7.3/10)

Ee Thanutha Veluppaan Kalathu is a 1990 Malayalam mystery thriller film directed by Joshy and written by Padmarajan. Mammootty stars as a police commissioner named Haridas Damodaran who leads the investigation into a gruesome murder streak that has similarities in the mode of murder. The story is about a god-man and how a god-man and his abilities influence the investigation. The film is also about mental illness which was the first of its kind in Mollywood. The film is full of thrilling moments and suspense at the end of the film. This is definitely a film not to be missed.

Utharam (IMDB rating: 7.8/10)

Utharam is a Malayalam mystery thriller featuring Mammootty, Sukumaran, Suparna Anand and Parvathy in the lead roles. The film is directed by Pvaithran and written by MTVasudevan Nair based on the story “No Motive” by Daphne du Maurier. The movie is definitely MT magic with a strong plot where the suspense was not revealed until the end of the movie. Another plus point of the film is the unusual way of investigating and the director really deserves a round of applause during the last ten to twenty minutes which disturbs everyone. It is one of the unique Mollywood films that has a realistic touch. Utharam is a simple thriller not to be missed in 2020. Better late than never.
